(The beginning of December 2011)
Because I am late blogging about my weight loss journey this is really more of a 6 week update and let me tell you these past 6 weeks have been hard.
I didn’t exactly pick the best time to decide to lose weight. The holidays are full of food, holiday parties, baking days, hot chocolate and lots and lots of treats. Not a friend to weight loss.
The first month was difficult. I counted my calories, but had a hard time fitting in a workout. My Hubby and I planned a work out schedule so we would each have days available to exercise. However, my days seem to be the day when the babies are the fussiest. My Hubby has been great and encouraged me to exercise even though it would leave him with two fussy babies, but I feel guilty leaving him with that. He works so hard all week so I have an opportunity to only work one day a week staying home with the boys the rest of the week and I hate to dump the stress of two fussy babies on him as soon as he walks in the door.
Well after a month of only a few work outs a week (on a good week) I managed to lose 5 pounds. Although I would love to have lost my goal of 2 pounds per week, I am happy with 5 pounds because it is still pounds lost!
With the holidays in full swing I knew I would have a hard time saying no to all the yummy things that would be offered. One of my biggest weaknesses is sweets and we all know the holidays are full of sweets.
I knew if I planned to make it through the month of December and lose any weight I was going to need a drastic weight loss plan. Sometimes I do better on stricter diets than simply counting calories. I the person who will not eat anything all day just so I can eat that piece of cake with dinner.
Luckily my Hubby has a few more pounds of “baby” weight to lose as well so he decided to go on a stricter diet with me. At least he won’t be tempting me! We have been on our new diet for 1 1/2 weeks and I have already lost 4lbs!! Woo hoo! I am so excited!
So what is this new weight loss technique we are using? Well we have been replacing 2 meals a day with protein shakes packed full of vitamins and nutrients and only eating one (healthy) meal per day. I actually feel like I get to eat more with this diet than I did before and I overall feel better and have more energy.
Before I would get caught up with the babies in the morning and when I finally was able to eat my first meal of the day it was often 2-3 in the afternoon. I would be starving and eat whatever was easy and fast, which meant not always healthy.
The protein shakes take about 5 minutes to make and 2 minutes to clean out the blender so I am able to eat more consistently and very rarely find myself starving. I actually stay pretty full throughout the day.
By the time Jeremy is home from work I am hungry, but not so hungry I eat more than I should. I am able to eat a little slower giving myself more time to realize I am full. It honestly has been great, and the best part is Jeremy doing it with me!! It is so nice to have someone to lose weight with even if he is beating me in weight loss (he lost 4.6lbs his first week!! Crazy!).
We are now trying to plan a better exercise schedule for me. After many talks with Jeremy I know it is perfectly ok for me to leave him with the babies so that I can exercise, even if that means leaving him with 2 fussy babies.
We also have decided it would be better for me to workout outside of our house, that way I do not hear the babies fussing and am not tempted to abandon my workout to help Jeremy. I will officially be starting Jazzercise the beginning of the year!! I did Jazzercise through college as a stress relief and loved it! I am so excited to get back to it! It will be nice to get out of the house 3-4 times a week alone to focus on getting back in shape. It will also be amazing to have an hour alone to de-stress and not have anyone needing me. I think this is going to be great for me and my family!
Throughout this 6 week journey my self-confidence has started to build. With each pound lost I feel like I can do this, taking a step towards my new self. I was even able to buy my first non-maternity shirt this past week! I am so excited to be moving in the right direction.
So far I have lost 49lbs since my last weigh-in at my doctor’s office and 56lbs since I got home from the hospital (due to all the swelling). I only have 11lbs to go!!
As I get to know my new self I am learning that although things will never be the same “normal” as they were before the boys were born my new self is still just as determined as I use to be. I am starting to really like this new me…..even if I am a little different than I was before.
(I just had to share a cute picture of my boys! No post is complete without their cuteness!)
